May 25, 2006 I wanted to let the member’s of S. S. P. B. A. and everyone else who comes to this site know how I feel about this association. I would like to start by telling a little about myself. My name is Sam Keller; I have been with the Faulkner County S. O. since 1998. At this point I am a patrol Sergeant and duel purpose dog handler, as well as a firearms instructor. Talk about several areas in which I could be named in a lawsuit, without even being there. I was very glad to learn that we here in
This association offers the best coverage (legal defense) that I have seen, at the lowest price. I have been helping Kimmons Gray (SSPBA Staff Rep) with some contacts in my area. We have had several F. O. P. leaders to join, because our legal defense plan is better. I also like the fact that if something happens while I am off duty and have to act in a law enforcement capacity I’m covered. We all know that we are never truly off duty. This includes any critical incident, shooting, car crash with injury or death, or any in custody death or injury.
I also like the fact that there is a death benefit. If I get killed in the line of duty, my beneficiary will get 1 year’s salary. I know it’s not a lot because where I work we are not overpaid, neither are any of you. It will help my family in their time of loss. SSPBA will also provide them with a list of and phone numbers to every benefit that is available to them from the Federal level right down to the bottom. Besides, if I am killed because of something that is not in the line of duty, they get $5000.00.
I truly wish I had been able to be apart of this association at the start of my carrier. There have been about 5 incidents that I would have been much better off had this been available to me at the time. I was very lucky, still I worry about one in particular; another year and I won’t have to anymore.
This association is run by Law Enforcement officers for Law Enforcement officers, not some civilian who does not understand what it is we do or go through. I urge each and every one of you to join. Do the homework; ask around, you’ll reach the same conclusion I did.
