Corinth Student Earns Police Benevolent Foundation Scholarship

 

(McDonough, GA – June 13, 2007)  On December 1, 2006, the Police Benevolent Foundation (PBF), a 501(c)(3) organization headquartered in McDonough, Georgia, launched its inaugural scholarship program. The window was open until March 1, 2007 and the Foundation received 25 applications from seven states. One of the applicants, Shannon Bugg of Corinth, Mississippi, exemplified the kind of student the PBF was looking to help.

            “Shannon Bugg’s academic record and personal accomplishments were impressive,” stated Executive Director Marlon Trone. “She more than met our criteria and we are pleased to be able to assist her with a scholarship of $500.00 as one of our Mississippi Division scholarship recipients.” According to Trone, the PBF anticipates providing larger scholarships in the future as donations increase.

            Bugg, a 2007 graduate of Kossuth High School, has been accepted to and is attending the Northeast Mississippi Community College. In her scholarship essay, Bugg stated “I feel that I have been fortunate to experience many achievements in my life academically.” According to her essay, Bugg was ranked forth in her class of 80 with a 4.0 grade point average and scored 27 on her ACT.

            Shannon and her parents, Ronnie and Tina Bugg, were on hand at the scholarship presentation by the Mississippi Police Benevolent Association (MSPBA) on June 6. Ronnie Bugg is Chief Deputy of the Alcorn County Sheriffs Department. Michael Hall, president of the Stateline Chapter of the MSPBA, presented an award check to Shannon at the Super 8 Hotel in Booneville.

            The Foundation scholarship may be used for tuition, room and board or books. The 2008 scholarship window will re-open December 1, 2007. Criteria for the scholarship applicants are listed on the PBF website www.pbfi.org  and the Southern States Police Benevolent Association website, www.sspba.org.

One of the applicants, Johnny Steverson of Terry, Mississippi, exemplified the kind of student the PBF was looking to help.

            “Johnny Steverson’s application was impressive,” stated Executive Director Marlon Trone. “He more than met our criteria and we are pleased to be able to assist him with a scholarship of $500.00 as one of our Mississippi Division scholarship recipients.” According to Trone, the PBF anticipates providing larger scholarships in the future as donations increase.

            Steverson, a 2004 graduate of Pearl High School, has been accepted to and is attending the New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier, Vermont. In his scholarship essay, Steverson stated “I am moving 1,500 miles away from my family to begin a two-year program in culinary arts…I have wanted a career in food service since I was a freshman in high school and now feel that I am finally able to achieve my goal.”

            Since Johnny Steverson started school in New England in March, his mother, Cecilia Kazery employed with the Mississippi Highway Patrol, was on hand at the scholarship presentation at the Mississippi Police Benevolent Association office on May 29. Mississippi Division President Chris Skinner presented an award check to Ms. Kazery on Johnny’s behalf.
