A total of 98 federal, state and local law enforcement officers died during the first half of 2011 (January 1, 2011 to June 30, 2011), according to preliminary data compiled by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. This represents a 14% increase over the 86 officer fatalities during the same time in 2010. Firearms-related fatalities reached a 20-year high...(08-05-11)
On July 7th former Taylortown, NC police chief Tim Blakeley received a jury verdict in his favor upon the conclusion of his wrongful termination trial against the town that had formerly employed him. Mr. Blakeley was represented by PBA attorneys John Roebuck and J. Michael McGuinness. The jury returned a verdict of $291,000 in Blakeley’s favor. After offset of his wages earned since his termination, the verdict stood at $100,000....(07-25-11)

Cary Chapter Seeks Support for Officer Matt Long
The Police Benevolent Foundation and the Cary Chapter of the North Carolina Police Benevolent Association are rallying behind PBA member and fellow officer Matt Long. Matt was recently diagnosed with cancer and will be undergoing extensive treatment in the ensuing weeks and months. Her mother-in-law gave the couple the weeping cherry when they moved in years ago. Peonies were started from bushes that came from her, too. For birthdays, they make pudding from persimmons that they harvested from a tree near the driveway.
