On Monday, Febuary 21st (President’s Day), the South Carolina Police Benevolent Association, Inc. co-sponsored the Spartanburg County Republican Party President’s Day Banquet. The Banquet was held in the ballroom of the Summit Point Conference Center. The ballroom was packed with about 370 Republicans who turned out in force to see the Massachusetts governor and rumored future presidential candidate, Mitt Romney who was in attendance for the event. In attendance for the South Carolina PBA were Piedmont Chapter members Paula Brewster – President, Wes Berkley – Senior Vice President, Reginald Spurgeon – Political Action Co-Chair, and Tony Ivey. Also attending the meeting on behalf of the South Carolina PBA were Division President Dave Soderburg and PBA endorsed Spartanburg County Sheriff, Chuck Wright.

This event was a good chance for local Republicans to size up their “rumored” next presidential candidate for the election in 2008. Romney came into this event with many of the party goers a bit skeptical of him but won them over in the end with his overriding message of fiscal conservatism and ardent patriotism. Romney, who hails as governor of the heavily democratic state of Massachusetts, was happy to be a part of this event and to have the event in Spartanburg, SC. He says he came to Spartanburg because he was “doing what is best for the Republican Party.”

The PBA was happy to be involved in this event and will continue to keep members informed on the political front of any new developments. It is never too early to prepare for the next term! Coverage of this event can be seen on C-SPAN over the next few weeks.
