PBA is Hoping for A Speedy Recovery for One of Its Own

On Tuesday, May 20 PBA member and Senior Vice President of the Tennessee Division of the PBA, was critically injured while responding to a burglary alarm at a NW Knoxville residence. Rickman, who is also President of the Knox County Chapter of the Tennessee PBA, was shot in 2001 and received the police department’s Purple Heart award.

The 45 year old officer is expected to recover but this shooting shines a light on the hazards of the profession and sacrifices made by our law enforcement officers and their families. Anytime an officer is shot, there is a collective sigh of distress from the community. All officers are aware of the danger but hope they are never confronted with such a reality. For officer Rickman, who has managed to survive two shootings, it’s clear that an angel has taken residence on his shoulder. Unfortunately, many other officers haven’t been as lucky.

So far, 41 law enforcement deaths have occurred in 2008. Our national average is approximately 140 each year. Georgia, Louisiana and South Carolina are all on the top 10 list of states with the most fallen officers.
