US House passes public safety collective bargaining bill…..

In Washington today, the United States House of Representatives passed H.R. 980, the “Public Employee-Employer Cooperation Act,” on a 314-97 floor vote (Click here to view the bill).

We were pleased to see 45 Representatives (both Democrat and Republican) from the Southern States PBA area voted for passage, 37 as original co-sponsors (Click here to see the results).

The legislation, introduced by Representatives Dale Kildee (MI) and John J. Duncan, Jr. (TN-2), would recognize the right of public safety employees to bargain collectively over hours, wages, and working conditions. This bill allows states one year to comply with the minimum provisions of this bill. After one year of non-compliance, regulation would default to the Federal Labor Relations Authority (FLRA).

The legislation now goes to the US Senate for further consideration.
