Oversight Committee hears from DPS officials on Prison Reform

On January 25th, the NCPBA was present at the Joint Oversight Committee on Justice and Public Safety meeting at the General Assembly. They met to hear an update on prison reform from North Carolina Department of Public Safety Secretary Erik Hooks. Hooks was supported by numerous staff in his presentation and members of the committee asked a wide array of questions.

On December 10th, 2022, NC State Park Rangers Douglas Austin and Jeb Rector attended their first North Carolina State LEO chapter meeting. Their goal was to bring awareness to the issues facing officers working for NC State Parks related to pay, lack of training, and subpar equipment.

When North Carolina Administrative Law Judge Michael Byrne served as a PBA lawyer for many years, Byrne vigorously represented members and protected their rights. Byrne also contributed to PBA victories on appeal by writing ”friend of the court” briefs for PBA in multiple North Carolina Court of Appeals and Supreme Court cases.
