The Knoxville Police Department has awarded its Meritorious Service Medal to Lt. Gene Sasscer.

Sasscer, an officer since November 1979, retires at the end of November. He was assigned in 2007 to KPD's Repeat Offender Squad, which targets street crimes, gun crimes, gangs and drug dealing.

His five years of leadership helped lead to nearly 1,660 arrests, the execution of 205 search warrants, the confiscations of more than 450 guns and seizure of more than $640,000 in cash. The squad has addressed nearly 400 community complaints under his watch.

Sasscer also helped work with Randy Nichols, Knox County district attorney general, on an effort to file nuisance injunctions against individuals and businesses. That effort has led to the closing of more than 20 businesses and homes due to association with crime, police said, and helped result in an 81 percent drop in calls for service and a 90 percent drop in reported crime in those areas.

"During a time in his career when most officers are planning for retirement, Lt. Sasscer has excelled in his performance," Chief David Rausch said. "On behalf of all Knoxville residents, we appreciate your service to the department and wish you all the best with your retirement."
