PBA of Georgia Legislative Update - Senate LEO Pay Task Force

The Georgia Senate has created a task force to look at pay for city and county law enforcement officers which will be called the Compensation of Police and Sheriffs (COPS). The purpose of the task force is to identify and recommend competitive and fair compensation packages for local officers.

The task force will be co-chaired by Lt. Governor Casey Cagle and Senator Greg Kirk (Americus). You may recall that Greg Kirk is the sponsor of SB 155 which proposes to create a joint House and Senate pay and benefit commission. The bill is technically still alive for the 2018 session, but due to chamber politics did not get out of the House Government Affairs Committee before the 2017 session ended.

The other senators on the task force are Tonya Anderson (Lithonia), Steve Gooch (Dahlonega), Tyler Harper (Ocilla), Jack Hill (Reidsville), and John Wilkinson (Toccoa). The state funded elected and appointed bosses associations of chiefs, sheriffs, counties, and municipalities will also have a representative on the task force.

While this is a step down from SB 155, it offers an important forum to address the low pay that plagues many law enforcement agencies in Georgia. If any of these senators are in your chapter please take a minute to thank them for their support: http://www.senate.ga.gov/senators/en-US/SenateMembersList.aspx
