TN Scholarship Recipient Abbey Apple

By Cindy Baugher

Abbey Apple, thankful recipient of this year's Tennessee Division scholarship, is well on her way to becoming a nurse. Inspired by the dedication of her mother — a nurse who has been an example to Abbey her entire life — she knew early on that she wanted to follow in her mother’s footsteps. "The greatest influence in my life has been my mom." She explained, "Watching her pursue her nursing career with such determination and grace was inspiring. Her resilience and strong work ethic continue to motivate me every single day."

Her father's service as a court officer for the Wison County Sheriff's Office over the past 18 years also played a pivotal role in shaping her path. "His dedication to protecting others and upholding justice has shaped my deep respect for public service and reminds me of the importance of serving with integrity and compassion."

Born and raised in Lebanon, Tennessee, Abbey says Lebanon helped shape her into the person she is today. Growing up there, and in her neighborhood specifically, felt like being part of one big family. "Several of us kids lived on the same street, and we experienced childhood milestones together. And there was always a strong sense of support and connection — everyone just looked out for each other."

With her father, Sergeant John Apple, in law enforcement and her mom in nursing, Abbey comes from a caring and supportive family. She's also blessed with a close relationship with her sibling. "I have an older brother who has always been my best friend and one of my biggest supporters. He recently got married, and I'm grateful to have gained a new sister through him," she shared.

Abbey attended high school at Watertown High School. Her active extracurricular involvement as president of HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) was an experience that fueled her passion for healthcare. Beginning in her junior year, she also gained real life experience in healthcare through working at an assisted living facility, a job which she said, "taught me valuable lessons in time management, responsibility, and compassion." Spanish club and National Honors Society also kept her busy in high school, as did volunteer work with her church’s vacation Bible school.

After her May 2024 high school graduation, Abbey enrolled full time in Cumberland University. Through dual enrollment, she had already racked up credit hours at CU while still in high school. In so doing, she witnessed firsthand the encouragement and support the faculty and students shared with each other that made her choice of college seem easy. "It felt like a place where I could truly grow — personally and academically." Through her present involvement with the Baptist Collegiate Ministry, Abbey has also benefitted. This has come not only from the fellowship of the group, but also from the opportunity the organization provides to serve the community in meaningful and fulfilling ways.

Thanks to her work as a dual enrolled high school student, in May 2025 Abbey graduated from Cumberland University with her associate of arts degree. She is currently working through the nursing program to earn her BSN, which she should wrap up by fall semester of 2027. Because of her passion for helping others, she says nursing is "more than just a career to me — it’s a calling to serve." Upon earning her BSN, Abbey's long-term plans are to work in a hospital setting to gain hands-on experience and eventually return to school to pursue her master's degree.

When she's not busy with her studies or her part-time job, Abbey unwinds by spending time on the lake or shopping. These pastimes help her to "stay balanced and grounded." She also enjoys camping because of the time it provides her to spend time with her family.

Her PBA member father, John, is incredibly proud of Abbey. He said, "Her dedication and drive inspire me every day, and I'm thankful for the role the PBF played in helping her pursue her education. The PBF scholarship program is more than just financial aid, it's an investment in the future of my child. Knowing that the SSPBA not only supports officers, but also their children says a lot about the values of this organization."

It is easy to see how Abbey is following in her dad's footsteps when John describes his law enforcement career. "I was led to law enforcement by a strong desire to serve my community and contribute to public safety efforts. As a court officer, I have the privilege of assisting both the community and court staff by ensuring the safety and security of the courtroom environment. What I enjoy most about being an officer is being a steady presence of structure, safety, and support for both the public and my colleagues. Each day offers an opportunity to make a meaningful difference – whether by maintaining order or helping someone take a step toward change. That sense of purpose is what continues to drive my passion for this career." Although John has never had to use the legal resources of the PBA, he has fellow officers who have and he's aware that the security they felt is comforting. He recommends PBA membership to others when it comes up. "PBA offers unmatched support and resources," he explains. "I always encourage my colleagues to become members because the benefits speak for themselves."

As for Abbey, receiving this scholarship provided by the PBF "means the world." She calls it a message of encouragement that shows her that others believe in her goals and want to invest in her future. In turn, she is committed to working hard, giving back, and honoring the support she's received by making a difference in the lives of others. And for that, she is truly grateful.
