VAPBA Newport News Chapter Update

Good Afternoon All,

I met with Chief Myers today and the results were positive.  He wishes to keep an open dialogue with the PBA.  To that end, I will be meeting monthly with Chief Myers to address any concerns our chapter members may have.  He will be meeting quarterly with me and the chapter board.  He is also contemplating inviting the three assistant chiefs to the meetings with the chapter board.

If members have anything they would like brought up to the Chief, please let me know.  If a member wishes to remain anonymous I will respect that and still bring their concerns to the command staff.  I advised him that our members attempt to use the chain of command whenever possible.  I also told him that we do not "ambush" folks.  Meaning if we have a concern, I will look up the appropriate policy, send it and the concern to his office and give him a chance to review and respond.  I am sure you will agree that is only fair.  I also assured him that we will try to address items in the proper venue.  For example: we would allow the uniform committee to attempt any change in the duty uniform prior to the PBA bringing it up.  Hopefully, this will avoid any duplication of effort.

Please contact me either via my personal e-mail address (pointers@live.com) or on my personal cell phone (757-897-1355) with any concerns/suggestions.  If you have a proposed fix that would also be helpful.

Also, please take a few moments to inquire of your co-workers whether or not they are members.  Once an incident has occurred or they are wronged by a supervisor it is too late to join and expect coverage for that situation.  I have applications available or the prospective member can go to sspba.org and join.  By joining online, coverage begins when they hit enter.

Once again, please do not hesitate to contact me if you are in need of assistance.  I believe that through open and honest communication Chief Myers will be an ally of our department and its PBA members.
