PBA Legislation Clarifies the Law Regarding the Special Separation Allowance

October 1, 2010

On July 31, 2009, HB 816 was signed into law by Governor Beverly Perdue. This bill was introduced at the request of the PBA by Rep. Tricia Cotham. Rep. Nelson Dollar, Rep. Marian McLawhorn and Rep. Jennifer Weiss also joined the bill as primary sponsors at the request of the PBA.

118th South Carolina General Assembly Summary 2009 - 2010

August 20, 2010

The 118th Session of the South Carolina Legislature opened on January 14, 2009 and adjourned Sine Die on June 29, 2010. There were fifty bills of interest to South Carolina PBA members followed during this session. Of those fifty bills, six passed. The Governor vetoed three of the five passed bills. One of the vetoes was overridden by the Legislature.

Over the last twenty years, we have dealt with the investigative methodology of the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation on a first hand basis in numerous instances as we have represented officers in criminal, civil and administrative litigation. We have been eye witnesses to these investigative failures. The PBA has periodically communicated our concerns and specific complaints about various SBI policies and practices. These communications have gone unanswered.

Cary Chapter to Host 4th Annual Officer of the Year Banquet

February 3, 2010

The Cary Chapter of the North Carolina Police Benevolent Association, in 2005, chose to sponsor an Officer of the Year award in honor of George Almond. Almond, a PBA member, was shot in the line of duty in October 2001. He survived the shooting and returned to duty as a Detective in juvenile investigations before retiring in August 2004. The award recognizes exemplary performance in the areas of leadership, community service, mentoring, excellence in performance, and valor. Officer Robert Tonietto, Officer Keith McKenna, Officer Glenn Mitchell, Corporal Jeff Huser, and Detective Mike Lindley have been named as finalists for the 4th annual award.
