2006 George Almond Officer of the Year Named

March 15, 2007

Detective Jim Grier was named the 1st recipient of the 2006 George Almond Officer of the Year award in festivities at the Embassy Suites in Cary on February 17, 2007. The Cary Chapter Board, in their first year chose to sponsor an Officer of the Year award in honor of retired Detective George Almond. Almond, who is a PBA member was shot in the line of duty in October of 2001.

Cary Chapter to Host Officer of the Year Banquet

February 21, 2007

The Cary Chapter, in its first year chose to sponsor an Officer of the Year award. The award was named for George Almond. Almond, a PBA member, was shot in the line of duty in October 2001. Almond survived the shooting and returned to duty as a Detective in juvenile investigations before retiring in August 2004.

109th Congress Summary

Governmental Affairs monitored 183 bills of initial interest to the PBA membership in this Congress. Of these bills 17 have passed, the remainder either died at adjournment or were passed in an amended form that no longer contain provisions affecting PBA membership.

PBA leads from the front with passage of important legislation

October 1, 2006

During the 2006 legislative short session a very important piece of legislation was passed into law and signed by Governor Mike Easley. Before H.B. 447, North Carolina local government police officers shot or otherwise injured feloniously, in the line of duty, could have their retirement contribution withheld and the employment time extended for the period they were recovering from their wounds/injuries.
