Cary Chapter to Host 4th Annual Officer of the Year Banquet

February 1, 2010

The Cary Chapter of the North Carolina Police Benevolent Association, in 2005, chose to sponsor an Officer of the Year award in honor of George Almond. Almond, a PBA member, was shot in the line of duty in October 2001. He survived the shooting and returned to duty as a Detective in juvenile investigations before retiring in August 2004. The award recognizes exemplary performance in the areas of leadership, community service, mentoring, excellence in performance, and valor. Officer Robert Tonietto, Officer Keith McKenna, Officer Glenn Mitchell, Corporal Jeff Huser, and Detective Mike Lindley have been named as finalists for the 4th annual award.

The Police Benevolent Foundation Establishes Support Fund for Injured North Carolina Officer Daniel Clark

October 13, 2009

The Police Benevolent Foundation, Inc. and the North Carolina Division of the Southern States PBA have set up a donation fund for Officer Daniel Clark who was seriously injured while responding to a call on Wednesday, October 7th at the Bojangles Restaurant on Peters Creek Parkway. The Police Benevolent Foundation, the North Carolina PBA and local law enforcement officers are asking for the community's help in providing Officer Clark the support that he will need in the days to come.

The Police Benevolent Foundation Establishes Support Fund for Fallen North Carolina Officer Mickey Hutchens

October 13, 2009

The Police Benevolent Foundation, Inc. and the North Carolina Division of the Southern States PBA have set up a donation fund for fallen officer Sgt. Mickey Hutchens who was shot while responding to a call on Wednesday, October 7th at the Bojangles Restaurant on Peters Creek Parkway. Sgt. Hutchens passed away on Monday, October 12th at Wake Forest Baptist University Center as a result of the injuries he sustained. Sgt. Hutchens, a 27-year veteran of the Winston-Salem Police Department, will be greatly missed.

Officer of the Year Banquet Auctioneer Featured on WRAL-TV

The third annual "George Almond" Officer of the Year awards banquet was held at the Embassy Suites in Cary on February 21, 2009. As part of the festivities a live auction was conducted by Ben Farrell to raise money for Cary Crime Stoppers and the Police Benevolent Foundation.

110th US Congress Summary

January 21, 2009

The 110th United States Congress convened on January 4th 2007, to conduct the people's business, and closed on December 30, 2008. There were 11,081 bills filed by this Congress, 7,340 by the House and 3,741 by the Senate. In keeping with the Southern States Board of Directors directive for the 110th Congress, passed in 2005, the Governmental Affairs Department monitored bills of interest to the PBA membership. This involved 111 bills, 74 in the House and 37 in the Senate. Of these bills, 7 were passed and became law (a summary is included).

The Mississippi PBA Establishes Memorial Fund for Fallen Law Enforcement Officer Lieutenant Robert Curry

August 15, 2008

On Thursday, August 14, 2008, the state of Mississippi, the community of Gulfport and the Southern States Police Benevolent Association lost a member of their family. Lieutenant Robert Curry, a fourteen year veteran of law enforcement, was fatally injured as a result of a motorcycle accident. The Southern States PBA and the Police Benevolent Foundation would like to express its deepest sympathy and compassion to Robert's family, friends and fellow law enforcement officers. We ask that the community join us in recognizing Robert's service and sacrifices as an officer and pray for peace of mind and healing as his wife, Leslie, and his family mourns his loss.
